With all the different choices out there, we're going to take a look at why Noxzema shaving cream stands out among the competition.
We reviewed a mix of some of the best shaving creams and gels out there, from the classic Barbasol that has stood the test of time better than any other shaving cream, to the more recent but resilient Edge Shave Gel. While these products will provide you with a great shave, Noxzema Shaving Cream delivers a whole package without having to make sacrifices. With Noxzema's reputation for caring for skin in general, it's no surprise that it will keep your face feeling great while providing an excellent shave.
Noxzema Shaving Cream Reviews
Noxzema knows faces and how to treat them right. In fact, their jingle back in the 1990s was "your face belongs to Noxzema." While the wording may be a little odd, the sentiment is right. For over a century Noxzema has been tackling facial skin care via an ever-widening range of products.
Noxzema got its start with its first eponymous product, a skin cream designed to hydrate and revitalize facial skin. Originally marketed as Dr. Bunting's Sunburn Remedy, legend has it that the name was changed after a satisfied customer told Dr. Bunting that the cream had "knocked my eczema." After the much-needed change in brand name, a century of research, testing, and development led to Noxzema being one of the most respected brands in skin care. With such a focus on facial health and hydration, it's no surprise that Noxzema got into the shaving cream business, and has been producing high-quality creams and gels for men as well as women.
What is Noxzema Shaving Cream?
Noxzema offers a wide range of shaving creams, including medicated creams for sensitive skin (and an extra sensitive variant) and creams containing aloe. In this review, we'll focus on the original Noxzema shave cream and explore why it is a steady favorite among shavers with all different skin types. The original Noxzema shaving cream consistently holds above a 4.5-star rating on Amazon, and you can find it listed in just about every review of the best shaving cream brands.
One of the things about Noxzema Shaving Cream that stands out over the competition is that even the regular formula tends to be gentle on sensitive skin. Many men who typically use the sensitive variety of other brands of shaving cream find that regular Noxzema shaving cream is gentle enough for their needs. And there is a problem with creams branded for sensitive skin that Noxzema manages to avoid: Sensitive formulas tend to eschew added scents that could irritate the skin, meaning that the smell of the cream is more basic and "medicinal." Noxzema shaving cream maintains the distinct Noxzema fragrance without irritating your skin.
Having been in the face cleansing business for a century, Noxzema isn't about to let its shaving cream off the hook without pulling double duty. Noxzema Shaving Cream uses a classic blend of eucalyptus, menthol, and a blend of oils to protect your skin and keep it hydrated while you shave. While the classic Noxzema scent comes off strong out of the can - it's often compared to Vick's vapor rub - it quickly dissipates to a gentle aroma that will wake you up and keep you feeling cool.
If you love the scent and want it to stick around a while longer, the menthol version has a stronger fragrance that will linger throughout the day.
For those who have gone without shaving for more than a day or two, the thick foam does wonders softening your beard for a quick, smooth shave. The smooth feeling will last all day and keep you free from red marks and razor burn, as well as reducing the chance of nicks and cuts due to its top-notch lubrication.
Noxema is touted amongst the old-fashioned brush and soap shavers as one of the best-canned shaving creams due to the fact that it lubricates as well as a shaving soap without needing to use a shaving brush. Given that it has been around since the old double-bladed safety razors were the standard, it's no surprise that it holds up to the standards of modern shavers as well as those who prefer an old-fashioned shave.
Prices for individual products can vary widely depending on where they are purchased. Buying in bulk online can land you some great deals, so for comparison purposes, we listed the best price we could find on Amazon for a pack of 6 cans for each product. The cans range in size from 7 oz to 11 oz, however, so we listed the price per ounce for an easy comparison. The products we reviewed here range in cost from $0.30 to $0.40 per ounce. In addition to the similar price points across each brand, prices do tend to fluctuate, so cost did not figure heavily into our review.
How it Compares
We picked a couple of similar products available on the market to see how they compare.
Edge Shave Gel for Men Ultra Sensitive
Plenty of shaving products are advertised as being for sensitive skin, but Edge Gel for Men Ultra Sensitive delivers on that promise. Edge users consistently experience a smooth shave that leaves their skin feeling moisturized and cool. In addition to containing moisturizing and soothing ingredients, the Ultra Sensitive version of Edge Shave Gel backs off on the added fragrances to reduce as many potential irritations as possible.
There area couple of drawbacks to these considerations, however. Since there is no added fragrance, some users have been turned off by the strong "medicinal" smell of the gel. It is also not as thick as some of its competitors, requiring you to lather on more gel than normal, and the can run out much faster than some other shave gels.
Despite its drawbacks, Edge Shave Gel for Men Ultra Sensitive is one of the best products we've found for shaving with very sensitive skin, and for many users, once they've tried Edge, they don't stray.
Price: Around $ for a pack of 6 7-ounce cans ($0.40 per ounce)
Gentle on Skin
- COLLOIDAL OATMEAL AND ALLANTOIN helps reduce shaving irritation on sensitive skin
- MOISTURIZERS AND LUBRICANTS provide unbeatable razor glide
- NO DYES and dermatologist tested
Barbasol Original Shave Cream
Barbasol Original Shave Cream will be celebrating its 100th birthday next year. As one of the oldest and best-established brands of shaving cream around, Barbasol has weathered the constant influx of competing foams and gels with stoic resilience. While the brand has released several variants over the years, including a variation of scents, a sensitive skin version, and a cream containing aloe, the original Barbasol can has been a staple of medicine cabinets since 1919, and for good reason.
Barbasol seems to stand by the old adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The famous shaving cream brand offers a cool, clean shave for a low price, with no bells and whistles. While Barbasol may not be as gentle on your skin and some offerings designed with sensitive skin in mind, it offers a consistent shave and classic smell that has stood the test of time.
Price: Around $ for a pack of 6 10-oz cans ($0.30 per ounce)
Gentle on Skin
NIVEA Men Sensitive Shaving Foam
Another offering for those with sensitive skin, NIVEA Men Sensitive Shaving Foam offers a smooth, clean shave with no alcohol or other irritants. This NIVEA formula contains all natural chamomile and vitamin E to soothe sensitive skin and keep it healthy and glowing. The cream's Active Comfort System is designed to fight razor burn and irritation immediately and strengthen the skin as you shave.
While many shaving products for sensitive skin are gels, the NIVEA offering gives those with sensitive skin who prefer a foam an option that won't leave their face red and raw.
Like other sensitive skin products, the lack of added scent means that the "medicinal" smell of the foam is very prominent, offering the only major drawback of this product.
Price: Around $ for a pack of 6 7-ounce cans ($0.38 per ounce)
Gentle on Skin
- Advanced shaving with skin guard technology softens your beard for a close and extra comfortable shave
- Protects skin from shaving irritations
- Formulated with no drying alcohol
The shaving creams and gels on this list are all high-quality and will provide you with a great shave. Ultimately, your favorite will come down to your preference in the following areas of critique. If you prefer gels over foams, you may gravitate toward the Edge Shave Gel, which has the added benefit of being great for sensitive skin. However, if you've been turned off by creams in the past, give Noxzema a try. The thick and soothing cream glides on about as smoothly as a gel and lubricates and hydrates.
Barbasol is an old standby and worthy of its reputation. Its consistently low price point is another tick in its favor. However, the classic formula is eclipsed by some of the newer products offered, and it isn't our favorite on this list.
NIVEA Men Sensitive Shaving Foam is another solid choice and the only one to offer chamomile extract for extra soothing. But, like the Edge Ultra Sensitive, the scent may leave you unimpressed.
Of all the products we reviewed, the Noxzema Shaving Cream, with its classic scent and thick, easy to apply consistency, edges out the competition. Noxzema knows skincare, and it may be the fact that the company only ventured into shaving cream after years of producing other skincare products that makes this feel more like a spa treatment for your face rather than just another shaving cream.
Given the fact that the normal Noxzema Shaving Cream formula is as gentle and moisturizing as the Sensitive Skin version of other brands, without the overwhelming medicinal smell, it is hands down our favorite, with an overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
